gospil. i love dpup beta3. i really like the blue-carbon theme.
i just ran beta4. it looks great but it won’t find my onboard sound and doesn’t detect my modem. i’ve had those issues in some of the recent pups and updates-216,218etc.
i’m running beta4 disc with my beta3 savefile . it seems to be ok.
do you have a newer wbar pet or special settings for it in the beta4 iso?
keep up the good work. i just ran beta3 for 11 days and no problems
just like to note . my browsing speed is up in beta4 from beta3. alot.
Hi, what Barry and you guys have done is fantastic! If we come to the point where debian, ubuntu and some rpm-packages can be installed and run under the same puppy, you have surpassed what I once got the impression that BeOs was supposed to be – before it actually came and disappointed us. I just hope you don’t apply to dpup the very strict policy regarding licenses and choise of packages that debian has applied in the latest versions. That may kill the feeling of freedom to choose with linux, some people may shy away because of that. I have the feeling the ‘ubuntu’ policy is more relaxed and appealing to people. when it comes to using .deb packages.
In a near future, I can see myself using a set of live-dpups with debian apps. for different occations instead of a very large debian installation, and just using my harddisks as a collective /home backup. I have played a little with dpup 4.82, and here are some comments and wishes.
1) As most people that use a prosess manager obviously have some knowledge about the linux system, you can save space by dropping ‘Pprocess’ and ‘top’ in favour of using just ‘htop’. I have used ‘htop’ with lenny and RHEL, and I prefer ‘htop’ over any graphic application ( I used ‘gps’ a lot earlier), and since ‘htop’ does all what ‘Pprocess does’ – and more, while at the same time satisfying those who prefer ‘top’, there is space to be saved.
2) For those of us that from time to time prefer to run things without X, an application like ’screen’, ‘lynx’, ‘pinfo’ and good old ‘midnight commander’ would be nice to have, and also mplayer, the later is also available as a grapic version as ’smplayer’.
3) I very often use my pups off internet, and I would absolutely like to be able to view the man- and info-pages of all installed applications. To be able to do that without occupying a lot of ram, can all available documentation be placed in /archive by default when using a live-cd/dvd version, to be read by loading on demand from the disc? In debian and redhat I have used ‘lynx’ (in debian ‘lynx-cur’) as a file-browser, and ‘pinfo’ to read info- and man-pages, they are actually both start-up apps in my fvwm setup. They have similar interface and are equally useful with or without X.
4) I really miss ‘emacs’, but I realize that it has nothing to do in a compact puppy. But emacs happen to have a little nephew called ‘zile’ that would be very appealing to emacs-fans. There are other emacs-clones also, but ‘zile’ is reasonably complete and very SMALL. Highly recommended for use in dpup.
5) The Dpup Control Panel is great. I hope you drop all the menu-items from the regular menus if they can be found through the control panel.
6) The setup of choises regarding mounting didn’t work very well, both regarding options and icons. It was impossible to remove the disk icon from the desktop.
7) The background and desktop icons in general gives me the impression they are intended for a very young audience, the ones in puppy 2.17.1 has a more ‘adult’ and businesslike feel to them. A choice between them as themes in setup would be nice. Also the color of the text under the icons didn’t reverse when switching between a light or dark background picture, and i couldn’t find anything about it in setup.
9) I don’t like firefox, I have used Moxilla/SeaMonkey for very long time. Can you make SeaMonkey an option again, please?
10) Can fvwm be used as an alternative window manager?
I will come back to you with more feedback after using dpup some more.
Yours, Olaf.
In answer to your questions…
1) Dpup does use htop and Lxtask…not top or Pprocess
The single or double click selection is an option in the Rox Filer options screen.
2) Lynx, screen pinfo and Midnight Commander are avaiable as addons already. Dpup already uses Mplayer.
3)The manual pages and documentation are already available in the devx package which is available at download site.
4) Zile is alraedy available as an addon.
5) The menu items for Control Panel Applets will stay for the people who do not use mouse interface.
6) There is a choice in Desktop Drive Icons Manager to remove them from the desktop already…always has been.
7) The desktop background and icon themes are already customizable to your own choice, including colours and text. As well there is a Theme Maker…
9) Seamonkey2 is an available option already for Dpup.
10) The only standard window manager options will be as per Debian repository…IceWM, Gnome, and KDE. You are welcome to install any window manager available …your choice.
Thank you for your report, however it appears that you haven’t actually used dpup-482beta4 as the vast majority of features you ask about are already there…
Thank You
Sorry guys, I wrote my comments using puppy4.0, and I was sure I had dpup beta4 on another dvd, but it turns out to be beta 3. My humble apologies!
Now I have played with beta4, and it is absolutely unbelievable what you have managed to do in such a short time since beta3. I am really deeply impressed! Even so, I have some small items that may (not) need your attention.
In Control Panel/jwm/Application launch buttons in tray/Edit your existing Panel Buttons:
The gtkdialog window that pops up will not go away! Using the radiolist box ‘Exit’ doesn’t help, those windows keep popping up, and killing them with F9 in htop or issuing a killall command didn’t work, a new one popped up again, I had to restart X to stop it.
When selecting Stardust in the desktop icon switcher, the small icons in the menu changes, but not the animated ones at the top of the screen, I don’t know if they are supposed to do that.
There is no reference to how to manipulate the row of animated icons.
Is there a reason for having NumLock activated?
In the task manager, the button text says ‘more details’ all the time; should it change to ‘less details’ when more details is active, or perhaps ‘toggle details’?
In the menu/Utility you have ‘Urxvt’ and ‘Xconsole monitor’, but I can not find XConsole as an item in any menu.
In the menus in XConsole, could you please make the menus stay open when clicked, and make sub-menus visible without having to move the cursor to the tiny, tiny arrowheads on the right side of the buttons? Can you add ‘preferences’ as a menu item – if not, perhaps a possibility to toggle a blinking cursor? I do not know if these issues are possible to manipulate when compiling, or if they demand reprogramming.
Coming back to an issue I mentioned earlier; in the Event Manager, you can untick a box to get rid of the drive icons on the desktop, but there will remain one icon that will launch Pmount. As long as ‘Drives’ already is in the animated desktop icons, as well as a menu item Pmount, why have one extra in the lower left corner? In the old HotPup settings manager you could also disable the daemon, and I suppose that also prevented the extra icon?
The explanatory text in the event manager’s Save Session window could perhaps be itemized and rewritten to appear less confusing. In my dpup the save interval was set default to 30. ?
The packet manager is not very good. I get no feedback when I install the same package several times, and there is a problem that you don’t get a status of installed packages (apart from those you installed yourself after initial installation), and dependencies handling – or at least reporting of the handling, is really bad. Removal of packages does not function as it should. To save space I tried to remove the packages in ‘Fun’ section, but had to give it up.
In debian there is in addition to the ‘remove’ command, a ‘purge’ command that also removes conffiles belonging to a package, there is no info about what the default behaviour is in dpup.
What version of devx is used for beta4?
I miss a button or menu item or Control Panel for ROX setup.
I tried to install seamonkey, but was presented with a whole page full of dependency problems. Is Seamonkey or IceWeasel a real alternative to Firefox, as the old Mozilla suite was?
I cannot find a way to set the clock in lower right corner to 24 hr.
I suggest that Xpad (540kb) a small, but very flexible app for making sticky yellow notes, dep. GTK+ 2.0, be installed by default.
I hope I don’t take up too much of your time with small things, but the possibilities for a massive success with puppy 5 may be increased by attention to details. I think a lot of regular Debian and Ubuntu users is gonna take a little puppy for a walk!
yours, olaf.
Thanks for you report Olaf,
With the exception of the items discussed below, the points you raise have been attended to in the beta5 release, due 26th November….
Urxvt and console monitor are gone in beta5…the Dpup Console menus will not change as they hard coded that way…
The animated icon bar will be a user selected option on first start, and a configuration program will be included with it…
Numlock will also be a user selected option….
The Puppy Package Manager is still a work in progress, and I envisage it will not be fully debugged until Puppy 5 Release candidate stage….in the same breath though, APT/Synaptic will be optional from beta5 onwards as an addon.
Beta4 uses beta1 devx, beta 5 will have its own devx.
Rox setup has always been a context menu choice –>Options in the right click menu of any icon.
Seamonkey 2.0 is already available as a single pet for dpup at the Puppy PetStore (http://www.petstore.puppyspace.org). As of beta5 release, Dpup will also gain its own online repository with access from the Puppy Package Manager.
Thank you
What is really missing in DPup and other Puppies is a hibernation feature (not the same thing as sleep). It is the only thing preventing me from switching Puppy, which is otherwise just incredible. Not having to close programs is one of the biggest time savers on PCs. Is it possible to add the feature or get the ”pm-hibernate’ from Debian?
Also, Quanta was not working the last time I checked.
Thanks for the great work.
Hi again. Will you include dash in the next release? I see that Debian is migrating from bash to dash, and I know that puppys depends on bash-scripts. Will there be a switch for puppy, and can existing scripts in puppy run with dash?
ahh i really dont know what ya’ll need to add i say it is a nice pup and either why i’ll end up changing thw WM’s and stuff
I find a md5sum for 5beta iso in dpup.org/test, but no 5beta .iso?
beta5 will not be up till December 1st…bandwidth issue.
olaf…Dpup being Debian based, already has dash….and yes existing scripts will run or more importantly are running when script calls for dash shell.
re. dash: I run lenny stable, sorry – forgot that you’re way ahead of me…
The yoUtube downloader, and also pwidgets as standard. Also a ptray incarnation. Overall beta5 is awesome in its new power to puppy that the debian repositories bring. Who will ever find the time to test and play all those games just for starters.
Strange. Crashed my dpupsave so that it wouldnt startX on boot. Crash occurred after many screensaver calls during download of quirky and a hang when saving ram to disc. My frugal instal of 431 dont have this ram save to disc so why does my frugal dpup need this problem causing save of ram? Anyhows booted pfix=ram and mounted the problem dpupsave to check against the backup and could not see any obvious differences. I didnt really know what to look for. After looking through the directories unmounted and rebooted. Strangely my i times failed to start now boots a little strangely at first but getting more normal with each boot. But now still have to use poweroff in a console to shutdown.
Completely fixed now. Ran xorgwizard and it automatically fixed the stretched icons and fixed the shutdown menu.
So in summary to fix a non performing try click mounting the dpupsave when it is not in use then unmounting, then on reboot run xorgwizard.
Hi again. I have been to busy to make much use of beta5, but what I’ve seen is awesome! But one problem I mentioned in my email nov 16. is still there:
In Control Panel/jwm/Application launch buttons in tray/Edit your existing Panel Buttons:
The gtkdialog window that pops up will not go away! Using the radiolist box ‘Exit’ doesn’t help, those windows keep popping up, and killing them with F9 in htop or issuing a killall command didn’t work, a new one popped up again, I had to restart X to stop it.
And one more tiny little thing: Booting is rather slow, isn’t it?
Thanks very much for putting together this great site.
